Overview

The full diaphragm valve range, from body material to diaphragm selection

One valve family, many configurations

Industrial plastic diaphragm valves isolate the process fluid from the operating mechanism with a flexible elastomer diaphragm that is pressed onto a seat by a compressor. The range covers PVC-U, CPVC, PP, and PVDF bodies, weir-type and straight-through flow paths, socket, threaded, and flanged ends, and handwheel, pneumatic, or electric operation, so a single supplier can cover most of a plant's shutoff and throttling points in one consistent design.

Choosing between the options

Selection starts with the fluid: the body material sets temperature and chemical limits, while the diaphragm elastomer is matched to the specific chemistry in contact with it. From there, the connection type follows the pipework, the flow path follows the solids content of the fluid, and the operator follows how often the valve is cycled. This page sets out how those choices fit together before moving into the individual product types.

Application

Where plastic diaphragm valves are used

Any line where the fluid is corrosive, carries solids, or must not touch a packed stem is a candidate for a diaphragm valve.

Water & Wastewater Treatment
Sludge, filtrate, and chemical feed lines carrying suspended solids.
Chemical Processing
Acid, alkali, and reagent lines where metal valves would corrode.
Mining & Mineral Processing
Abrasive slurry lines where a clear flow path limits clogging.
Pulp, Paper & Textile
Fibrous stock, bleach, and dye lines that foul cavity-style valves.
Electronics & Surface Finishing
Plating, etching, and rinse circuits needing a non-metallic wetted path.
Power & Utilities
Scrubber, ash, and treatment chemical lines in plant utility systems.
Selection Guide

Body materials across the diaphragm valve range

Each body material trades temperature range, chemical scope, and cost; the diaphragm is then selected separately.

Body MaterialTemperature RangeTypical StrengthsCommon Use
PVC-U0°C to 60°CBroad acid and alkali resistance, lowest costGeneral water and chemical service
CPVC0°C to 95°CHigher temperature ceiling with similar chemistryHot process water and chemicals
PP0°C to 90°CGood solvent resistance, lightweightDosing, plating, general process lines
PVDF-20°C to 99°CResistance to strong oxidizers and halogensAggressive and high-purity service

Comparison

Diaphragm valves compared with other plastic valve types

Each valve style has a duty it handles best; diaphragm valves lead where solids, throttling, and stem sealing matter.

Advantage

What the diaphragm design offers

Packing-Free Stem
No stem gland touches the process fluid, removing a common leak path.
Clog-Resistant Flow Path
A smooth body contour passes solids and fibers that foul other valve types.
Proportional Throttling
Diaphragm position can be set anywhere between open and closed.
Broad Material Coverage
Four body materials and several diaphragms cover most chemistries.
Flexible Operation
Handwheel now, with an actuator interface for later automation.
Easy In-Line Service
Diaphragm replacement is done by lifting the bonnet, without removing the body.
Structure & Components

What is inside the valve

A compressor presses the diaphragm onto the weir seat, sealing the flow path while keeping the bonnet dry.

1. Body — Plastic body forming the flow path and weir seat
2. Diaphragm — Elastomer membrane that seals and isolates the bonnet
3. Compressor — Transfers stem movement into diaphragm deflection
4. Bonnet — Houses the stem and compressor, bolted to the body
5. Stem & Handwheel — Raises and lowers the compressor to set flow
6. Position Indicator — Shows the open or closed state of the valve
Quality Control

Every valve is checked before it ships

The same inspection sequence applies across every body material and size in the range.

1
Material Check
Resin and elastomer batches are checked for grade and consistency.
2
Dimensional Check
Body, flange, and bonnet dimensions are measured against drawings.
3
Hydrostatic Test
Each body is pressure tested to confirm its rated working pressure.
4
Diaphragm Seal Test
An air or water test verifies bubble-tight shutoff with the diaphragm seated.
5
Operation Check
Handwheel torque and compressor travel are checked across the full stroke.
6
Batch Traceability
Production batches are recorded back to raw material lots.
Operators

Handwheel, pneumatic, or electric

All operator types mount on a common bonnet interface, so a manual valve can be automated later without replacing the body.

Operation TypeBest Suited ForKey Characteristics
HandwheelLocal throttling and shutoffLowest cost, direct tactile control
Pneumatic ActuatorAutomated lines with compressed airFast cycling, positioner option for modulating control
Electric ActuatorRemote or building-system controlled linesWired control, no air supply needed
Installation & Maintenance

Getting it right in the field

Installation Guidance
  • Match the connection type to the pipework and support the line so the body carries no pipe load.
  • Allow solvent-welded joints to cure fully before pressurizing.
  • Orient the valve so the bonnet can be removed for diaphragm service.
  • Cycle the valve through its full stroke after installation before returning it to service.
Maintenance Guidance
  • Inspect the diaphragm periodically for cracking, swelling, or permanent set.
  • Replace the diaphragm on a schedule suited to the fluid, temperature, and cycle rate.
  • Re-torque bonnet bolts after the first thermal cycles and at routine turnarounds.
  • Keep spare diaphragms in the correct material on hand.

FAQ

Common questions

What is the main reason to choose a diaphragm valve over a ball valve?
The diaphragm keeps the stem out of the process fluid and the flow path stays smooth, so slurries, fibers, and corrosive fluids are handled better, with proportional throttling as an added benefit.
How do I choose the diaphragm material?
Match it to the fluid first: EPDM for water and dilute chemicals, FPM for oils and some solvents, and PTFE-faced EPDM for the broadest chemical resistance.
What is the difference between weir-type and straight-through bodies?
A weir-type body has a raised seat that shortens diaphragm travel and extends diaphragm life, while a straight-through body offers an unrestricted bore for heavy slurries.
Which connections are offered?
Socket (solvent weld), threaded BSP or NPT, and flanged ANSI, DIN, or JIS ends.
Can a manual valve be automated later?
Yes, a common bonnet interface accepts pneumatic or electric actuators without changing the valve body.
