Overview

Compressed-air operation for fast, repeatable automated shutoff

A plastic valve body paired with an air actuator

Pneumatic actuated plastic ball valves combine a corrosion-resistant PVC, CPVC, PP, or PVDF ball valve body with a double-acting or spring-return pneumatic actuator mounted on a standard ISO 5211 pad. Compressed air drives the actuator's piston or rack-and-pinion mechanism to rotate the ball a full 90 degrees, giving fast, repeatable open/close cycling that a manual lever cannot match on lines that are automated, remotely controlled, or cycled frequently throughout the day.

Built for automated process and utility lines

Because the valve body keeps the same chemical-resistant construction as its manually operated counterpart, pneumatic actuation can be added to PVC, CPVC, PP, or PVDF valves without changing the wetted materials. Solenoid valves, limit switch boxes, and positioners can be fitted to the actuator for remote signaling, position feedback, or throttling control, making this configuration the standard choice for PLC- or DCS-controlled batching, dosing, and process isolation systems.

Application

Where pneumatic automation is the practical choice

Compressed air is already available in most process plants, making pneumatic actuation the fastest and most cost-effective way to automate chemical-resistant shutoff.

Chemical Batching & Dosing
Sequenced isolation on batching skids where valves cycle many times per shift.
Water & Wastewater Treatment
Automated filtration, backwash, and chemical feed control from a central control room.
Semiconductor Process Lines
Repeatable, contamination-free shutoff on ultrapure water and process chemical supply.
Hazardous Area Installations
Air-driven actuation avoids electrical components in classified zones.
Skid-Mounted Systems
Compact automated valve packages for pre-assembled process and dosing skids.
Cooling & Utility Systems
Automated makeup water, blowdown, and chemical treatment isolation.
Actuator & Body Materials

What the assembly is built from

The valve body material is selected for chemical service, while the actuator housing is chosen for the ambient environment.

Comparison

Pneumatic vs. electric actuation on plastic ball valves

Both automate the same valve body; the choice usually comes down to what utility is already available and how fast the cycle needs to be.

FactorPneumatic Actuated ValveElectric Actuated Valve
Power SourceCompressed airElectrical supply (AC or DC)
Cycle SpeedVery fast, typically under a few secondsGenerally slower, smoother travel
Fail-Safe OptionSpring-return closes or opens automatically on air lossRequires battery backup for fail-safe behavior
Hazardous AreasNaturally suited, no electrical components at the valveRequires explosion-proof rated actuator
Infrastructure NeededCompressed air distribution to each valveElectrical wiring and control cabling
Position FeedbackAvailable via limit switch box accessoryOften integrated with modulating control options
Advantage

Why plants automate with pneumatic actuators

Fast, Repeatable Cycling
Air-driven actuation opens and closes in a few seconds, suited to frequent automated cycling.
Fail-Safe Options
Spring-return actuators drive the valve to a safe open or closed position automatically if air pressure is lost.
Hazardous Area Friendly
No electrical components at the valve itself, simplifying use in classified or wet environments.
Simple, Robust Mechanism
Piston or rack-and-pinion actuators have few moving parts and tolerate industrial duty well.
Compatible with Existing Air Systems
Drops into plants that already run compressed air for other pneumatic equipment.
Retains Body Chemical Resistance
The underlying PVC, CPVC, PP, or PVDF wetted parts are unchanged from the manual valve.
Structure & Components

What is inside the assembly

A pneumatic actuator bolts onto the valve's ISO 5211 pad, with the drive coupling engaging the stem to rotate the ball.

1. Pneumatic Actuator — Piston or rack-and-pinion mechanism that rotates the output drive 90°
2. Mounting Bracket — Couples the actuator to the valve's ISO 5211 pad
3. Stem Coupling — Transfers actuator rotation to the valve stem
4. Valve Body & Ball — Chemical-resistant plastic body housing the floating ball and seats
5. Air Ports & Fittings — Connect the actuator to the compressed air supply lines
6. Optional Solenoid / Limit Switch — Controls air flow to the actuator and reports valve position
Quality Control

Every assembly is checked before it ships

Inspection covers both the valve body and the actuator's air-driven cycling before the two are shipped as a matched assembly.

1
Valve Body Test
The bare valve body is hydrostatically pressure tested before actuator mounting.
2
Seat Sealing Test
An air or water seal test verifies bubble-tight shutoff across the ball and seats.
3
Actuator Cycle Test
The mounted actuator is cycled open and closed under rated air pressure to confirm smooth, full-stroke travel.
4
Fail-Safe Verification
Spring-return units are tested for correct fail-safe direction on simulated air loss.
5
Torque & Coupling Check
Stem coupling alignment and torque transfer are checked to prevent slippage under load.
6
Batch Traceability
Production batches are recorded, allowing traceability back to raw material and actuator lots.
Air Supply & Sizing

Matching actuator size to valve and pressure

Actuator torque must exceed the valve's break-to-open and running torque at the available air pressure, with a safety margin for aging seats.

Valve SizeTypical Actuator SizeNotes
DN15 – DN25Compact double-acting or spring-returnFits small dosing and instrumentation lines
DN32 – DN50Mid-size double-acting or spring-returnCommon on process and utility isolation points
DN65 – DN100Larger actuator with higher output torqueSized with a safety factor above measured seat torque
Installation & Maintenance

Getting it right in the field

Installation Guidance
  • Confirm air supply pressure and flow meet the actuator's rated range before commissioning.
  • Fit an air filter/regulator ahead of the actuator to keep supply air clean and dry.
  • Support the pipeline near the valve, since the added actuator weight increases the load on the body.
  • Cycle the assembly through several full strokes on commissioning to confirm smooth, unobstructed travel.
Maintenance Guidance
  • Check air line filters and regulators periodically to prevent moisture or debris reaching the actuator.
  • Inspect actuator seals and fittings for air leaks during routine maintenance rounds.
  • Verify spring-return fail-safe action periodically by simulating a loss of air supply.
  • Service valve seats and seals per the base valve's maintenance guidance; the actuator can be unbolted for access.

FAQ

Common questions

What air pressure is needed to operate the actuator?
Most actuators operate on clean, dry compressed air in the range of 40–90 psi (3–6 bar); exact requirements depend on the actuator and valve size selected.
What is the difference between double-acting and spring-return actuators?
Double-acting actuators use air pressure to both open and close the valve, while spring-return actuators use air to move one direction and an internal spring to fail-safe to the open or closed position if air is lost.
Can the valve body material be selected independently of the actuator?
Yes, the actuator mounts on a standard ISO 5211 pad common to PVC-U, CPVC, PP, and PVDF valve bodies, so the wetted material is chosen based on the process fluid.
Can position feedback or remote control be added?
Yes, limit switch boxes for position feedback and solenoid valves for remote air control are available as accessories on the actuator.
Is this suitable for hazardous or wet areas?
Pneumatic actuation avoids electrical components at the valve itself, which is one reason it is often preferred in classified or wash-down environments.
